ISSUE:
Seattle Public Schools plan to save money on "bricks and
busses" misses two incredible opportunities.
-
First, schools are more than bricks.
-
Second, there is a better way to save money.
It is time give Seattle the small town advantage. Instead
of shutting down schools, disbanding student bodies and
scattering teams of educators, now is the time to open our
doors.
In small towns, schools are available to the public for
Scout meetings and town halls. Citizens, who do not have
students in the schools, are interested in the school plays
and football games. The rent generates revenue and the civic
involvement is priceless.
When the public participates in the schools the buildings
cannot be neglected. Any seasoned facility manager knows
that for every $1 spent on prudent maintenance management $7
is saved on crisis management. A carefully maintained
building lasts a lot longer.
Instead of saving money by junking good schools we should
avoid costly disasters by planning ahead for the care of
those schools. Less money will be required for "bricks" and
more money will go into the classrooms -- where it belongs.
